Google has released a native Gemini desktop app for Windows 10 and 11, putting its AI assistant a keyboard shortcut away from any active window. The app runs globally and is available for download at gemini.google/desktop.

The core interaction model is simple. Press Alt + Space anywhere on your PC and Gemini appears over your current work. No switching windows, no opening a browser tab, no navigating to a website. The shortcut behavior mirrors how many users already interact with system-level tools like Spotlight on macOS or PowerToys Run on Windows. Gemini Spark 1 as a Background Agent
Inside the app, the more substantial capability is Gemini Spark 1, described as a 24/7 personal AI agent. The pitch is handoff: give Gemini a multi-step task and let it work while you do something else. The agent can pull information directly from Google apps like Gmail and Google Drive, which means it has access to your email threads, documents, and spreadsheets without you manually copying context into a chat window.
For users already embedded in Google Workspace, this is the integration that matters. Asking Gemini to draft a project summary by synthesizing information from three different Drive documents and a Gmail thread is a task that would otherwise take twenty minutes of gathering and organizing. Whether the draft is good enough to use as-is or just a starting point, the time saved is in the collection, not the writing.
Creative Generation on the Desktop
The app also includes image and video generation. Nano Banana handles image creation for things like presentation visuals, while Gemini Omni 1 manages video generation. Both run inside the desktop app rather than requiring a browser or separate tool.
