Die With Me Turns AI Token Limits Into a Social Experience
Running out of tokens used to be a solitary frustration. You hit your Claude Code limit mid-refactor, stared at the error message, and waited. Now there is an app that turns that moment into a shared one. Die With Me, a macOS menu bar app launched on September 17, 2026, shows your friends' AI usage as little animated mascots in your menu bar. When your allowance runs low, the mascots get sleepy. When you hit 10% or less, a chatroom opens.
The app is free, requires macOS 13 or later, and is invite-only. It connects to Claude Code via OAuth and to Codex through your existing system-level authentication. It reads only your usage data through official APIs. It does not access your code, your prompts, or your project files.
How the Mascots Work
After installation, Die With Me places animated mascot icons in your macOS menu bar. These mascots represent your remaining Claude Code and Codex usage. As your token or credit allowance depletes, the mascots change state. At full capacity they are alert. As usage climbs toward the limit, they slow down. At 10% or less, they fall asleep and the chatroom unlocks.
The chatroom is the social core of the app. It is a dynamic space that becomes accessible only when your AI session or weekly energy drops to 20% or less. It functions as a waiting room where users congregate, share progress, or just hang out while their tokens regenerate. The constraint is the feature. You do not join the chatroom because you want to chat. You join because your AI clocked out and your friends are still there.
You and your inviter become friends automatically during setup. The invite system controls growth and keeps the network friend-based rather than open. Each user receives four new invite codes per day. If you do not have an invite, you can DM the developer on Instagram or join the waitlist through the website.
The Privacy Model
The app requests read-only access to your Claude Code and Codex usage data through official APIs. For Claude Code, you connect your account via OAuth in the app's Settings. For Codex, it uses your existing system-level authentication. The app periodically polls the respective service's usage API to fetch your remaining quota for sessions and weekly limits.
Die With Me does not access, read, or transmit your code, prompts, or any sensitive project files. All connections use secure authentication. The usage data is used to animate the mascots and determine chatroom access. It is not stored beyond what is needed for the current session state.
If you want to use the social features without connecting an AI service, you can select "Just here to hang out" during setup. This gives you access to friend lists, lounges, and voice messages with a manual or generic activity status. The mascots will not track real usage, but you can still participate in the community.
Why This Exists
The timing is not accidental. Agentic coding tools have created a new social reality around token limits. Microsoft reportedly ordered engineers off Claude Code after per-engineer costs hit roughly $2,000 per month. Uber's CTO disclosed that the firm burned through its entire 2026 AI budget on coding agents in four months. Goldman Sachs projects a 24-fold increase in token consumption by 2030.
Die With Me treats these limits as a shared condition rather than a private problem. The app's tagline is "a little company between prompts." The mascot system makes usage visible to your friends. The chatroom creates a space for the idle time that token limits produce. The invite system keeps the network small and personal.

What Is Missing
The app is macOS only. A Windows waitlist is available through a Tally form, but no release date has been announced. The chatroom unlock threshold is fixed at 10% or less, which means the social feature activates only when you are nearly out of tokens. Whether that threshold is the right design choice depends on how often users actually run low.
The invite system limits reach. Four invites per day per user means growth is slow and organic. For a social app, that is either a feature or a limitation depending on whether you want a tool your friends actually use or a tool that feels exclusive.
Die With Me is available as a .dmg download from diewithme.co. The invitation code from your email or inviter fills in automatically during setup. The app is free with no in-app purchases mentioned.
