Microsoft has quietly built carbon awareness into Windows Update, and it's one of those features that sounds modest until you consider the scale. Starting with Windows 11 22H2, the operating system can shift update installations to times of day when the electrical grid in your region is drawing more from renewable sources. Multiply that across hundreds of millions of Windows machines, and the aggregate reduction in carbon emissions becomes meaningful.
How Carbon-Aware Scheduling Works
When a device is plugged in, powered on, connected to the internet, and regional carbon intensity data is available, Windows Update schedules installations for specific windows when grid electricity is cleaner. The system uses publicly available grid carbon intensity signals to determine when those windows occur. This means a machine in a region with heavy solar generation might defer an update until midday when solar output peaks, while a machine in a wind-heavy region might wait for overnight hours when wind generation is strongest.
Users always have the option to override the feature and install updates immediately through the Windows Update settings page. When the feature is active, a message in the settings panel reads "Windows Update is committed to helping reduce carbon emissions."
Power Settings Get a Greener Default
Alongside the scheduling change, Microsoft adjusted the default power settings for display and sleep to reduce emissions when machines are idle. These are defaults, not mandates, so administrators and users can tune them to their needs. The combination of smarter update timing and lower idle power consumption addresses two of the most common sources of wasted energy in enterprise environments: machines that stay fully powered when no one is using them, and background processes that run during peak grid demand.
