Meta launched Muse on Tuesday, a personal AI agent the company is positioning as the centerpiece of a multi-billion-dollar strategy overhaul aimed at catching up to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The product handles everyday tasks like online shopping, email, and trip planning, and Meta is betting that ease of use and privacy features will differentiate it from a crowded field of competing assistants.

What Muse Actually Does

Muse works as an autonomous agent that can open a browser, fill out forms, and negotiate on a user's behalf once given a goal. For longer tasks, it continues working in the background after the user closes the app, returning when something changes or when it needs approval for actions like making a purchase. The assistant launches in the US on iOS, Android, and muse.ai, with AI glasses support coming later. It is free for most users, though Meta said paid subscriptions will exist for people who want more capability without specifying pricing or limits.

Communication happens through the Muse app or WhatsApp. Meta claims the assistant remembers details users share even if mentioned once, enabling unprompted suggestions. The company emphasizes that no technical experience is required and there is no learning curve, though those are marketing claims that will need to hold up against actual usage.

The Privacy Architecture

Given that an AI agent with access to personal information, passwords, and payment methods is inherently a security risk, Meta built a layered system. Muse runs on a virtual computer in the cloud designed to isolate each user's data. It has no visibility into passwords or payment methods, and a separate AI agent called Sentinel monitors the same virtual machine to block any action that would reach the internet without explicit approval.

Meta plans to introduce a confidential version of the virtual machine later this year, encrypted so that even Meta cannot access it. 1Password and Shop Pay integration are on the roadmap, and Muse already supports Stripe's Link for secure checkout. Users can opt out of having their interactions used to train Meta's AI models, and they can instruct Muse to forget specific information it has learned.

A Crowded Playing Field

Muse enters a market where several competitors already offer similar functionality. OpenAI has ChatGPT Work, Anthropic has Claude Cowork, Microsoft has Copilot Tasks, and Google has Gemini Spark. Most of those target businesses or technically inclined users, which is the gap Meta is trying to exploit by positioning Muse as accessible to anyone. The company's social media reach and consumer brand recognition give it a distribution advantage, but overcoming trust issues from past privacy scandals and AI missteps will be the harder challenge. A support chatbot that helped hackers compromise over 20,000 Instagram accounts and an AI-generated clickbait news feed that violated its own policies are the kinds of incidents that make users cautious about letting Meta handle sensitive personal data.
