Hacktoberfest 2026 shifts from pull requests to AI-powered projects
Hacktoberfest returns this October with a format that moves away from the traditional pull request count model. Instead of hunting for repositories and submitting fixes, participants build brand-new projects with open-source AI at their core and write about them on DEV. The shift reflects how developer engagement patterns have evolved alongside the rapid adoption of AI tools.
Five challenges, one prompt, a new theme each week
The centerpiece is five DEV Challenges running back to back across October. Each challenge uses the same core prompt, so participants always know what DEV is looking for, but the theme stays secret until launch day. A weekend challenge kicks things off, followed by four more challenges launching every Monday. This structure means someone joining in week four competes on the same footing as early participants — each window is a fresh start.
Prizes across categories
Every challenge has its own winners. The overall prize per challenge includes $250, a DEV++ membership, and an exclusive DEV badge. Featured categories carry $200 prizes and cover technologies like Render, TabPFN, Tinker, Arduino, DigitalOcean, and Gemma. Partner categories at $100 each include Backboard, ElevenLabs, Entire, GitHub Copilot, Mastra, MongoDB Atlas, Sentry Agent Tracing, SerpApi, Temporal, and Tiger Data. A pro tip notes that partner category winners come from a smaller submission pool, meaning odds are meaningfully higher for those tracks.
Free credits and partner perks
Several partners are providing free credits and promo codes including Tinker, Render, Backboard, and ElevenLabs. Participants can claim these at hacktoberfest.com/my. The complete partner list and available credits may shift as new partners join throughout the month.
Judging hinges on the write-up
Since DEV is a community of writers, the project description matters as much as the code. Writing quality carries the most weight — judges look for clear, engaging posts that explain what was built, who it's for, and why open innovation matters. Relevance to the prompt and theme, creativity, technical execution, and meaningful use of partner technology (optional but rewarded in partner categories) round out the criteria.
Show your work
Participants are encouraged to save agent sessions with DevRelay and embed them in their DEV posts, or link to them. This optional practice helps judges understand the building process from idea through execution.
