OpenAI has brought voice-based agentic features to the ChatGPT mobile app, enabling subscribers to trigger complex workflows — such as drafting documents, writing emails, and summarizing Slack messages — entirely through spoken commands on their phones.
What the update does
Plus and Pro subscribers can now use the Work tab on the mobile app to create documents, draft emails, and summarize Slack messages. Beyond those core tasks, subscribers also gain access to site building, presentation creation, a cloud browser, and financial tools within ChatGPT. Free and Go tier users are limited to working with plugins and connected apps.
The update also improves how voice conversations produce text output, making it richer and more detailed. Plus users can switch between text and voice input with ease, and they can start a conversation on their phone and continue it on a desktop — a continuity feature that mirrors how the desktop integration worked after OpenAI launched GPT-Live in July.
The reasoning behind the move
OpenAI is responding to a measurable shift in how users interact with AI assistants. An increasing number of people are choosing voice commands over typing when issuing complex instructions, particularly on mobile devices where text input is cumbersome. The company rolled out GPT-Live, its conversational model, in July and first integrated it with the desktop app. This mobile update extends the same voice-driven workflow capabilities to phones.
How OpenAI differs from competitors
The update highlights a design choice that sets OpenAI apart from its closest rival. Anthropic recently made the handoff between mobile and desktop easier and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces into a single experience. OpenAI is keeping chat and workspaces as separate parts of the app, preserving the distinction between casual conversation and task-oriented work.
What it means for mobile AI use
Voice-based agentic features turn the mobile ChatGPT from a text-in, text-out tool into something closer to a hands-free assistant that can execute real work tasks. The split between subscriber tiers — where full agentic capabilities require Plus or Pro — reinforces OpenAI's strategy of reserving the most complex workflow features for paying users, while the free tier remains focused on plugin-based extensions rather than built-in agentic actions.
